Cornish Blue Cheese is a truly artisan handmade cheese, and one which is designed to be eaten young. Its flavour is mild and creamy with a dense texture and buttery richness, and it has a gentle sweetness instead of the ‘salty tang’ common of other traditional blue cheeses such as Stilton. These qualities have not gone unnoticed as Cornish Blue beat 2632 competitors to become Supreme Champion at the 2010 World Cheese Awards, with The Independent headlining its article with “THE BRITISH CHEESE THAT LEFT THE FRENCH FEELING BLUE”.

The Story
Cornish Blue is made by Philip and Carol Stansfield using milk from the family’s farm at Upton Cross on the southeastern fringes of Bodmin Moor where they have farmed since 1994. Cornish Blue was born out of adversity. The milk price in the mid-1990s reached over 26p/litre, but by May 2000 this had dropped by some 40% to under 15p/litre, leaving many dairy farmers, the Stansfields included, struggling to survive. Not wishing to sell their dairy heard, they researched cheesemaking as potential alternative source of income and, to cut a long and inspiring story short, in 2001 their Cornish Blue cheese hit the market. The timing turned out to be perfect, filling a gap in the market for a softer, mild blue cheese and changing their lives in the process.
Since then, demand for Cornish Blue has gone from strength to strength and the awards have continued to mount up.
